What Are Rites of Passage Essay Example
What Are Rites of Passage? Essay In life, as some might say, we all go through different stages. The traditional stages are usually classed as being born, childhood, adolescence (through which, learning is also categorised), adulthood, middle age, old age, and finally, death. In Christianity, and, indeed, most religions, these stages, or phases of life, are marked with a ceremony; to celebrate ones passing through life, and closer to heaven (where, Christians say, one goes to after death a reward for being good and doing the right things during life) and God. The Diagram, below, shows a few of them. These ceremonies are what Rites of Passage are. A rite, or ritual is just a formal way of stating to oneself, others, and God, that they have passed through their last stage, and have moved on to the next, hence the term. The ceremonies, themselves, usually have set orders, and customs based on what God has told them to do, through the Bible and Jesus. Baptism Go therefore and make disciplesbaptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit Matthew 28:19 When a baby is born, it is the start of a new life, therefore, Christians celebrate its starting the journey, with its baptism, or christening. It also reflects Jesus, the head of the church, as, before he began to spread his message, he was baptised in a body of water, by John the Baptist: We will write a custom essay sample on What Are Rites of Passage? specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on What Are Rites of Passage? specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on What Are Rites of Passage? specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, in order to be baptised by him. But the latter tried to prevent him, saying: I am the one needing to be baptised by you, and are you coming to me? In reply Jesus said to him: Let it be, this time, for in that way it is suitable for us to carry out all that is righteous then he quit preventing him. After being baptised Jesus immediately came up from the water; and, look, the heavens were opened up, and he saw descending like a dove Gods spirit coming upon him. Look! Also, there was a voice from the heavens that said: This is my son, the beloved, whom I have approved.' Matthew 3:13-17 To imitate Jesus, the christening takes place around a round water container made of stone, called the font, near the entrance of the church, symbolising their entry into the Christian faith (similarly, in a funeral, the body is taken out through an exit at the opposite end of the church to symbolise their exit. See Death). Everyone assembles around the font, filled with holy water (water which has been blessed), and the priest, or minister, then makes the sign of the cross on the babys forehead, and says: I baptise you [name] in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit/Ghost, referring to the bible. This washes away any sin, and blesses the child for the future. The child is then given a Christian name, and the Godparents are appointed. It is the responsibility of the Godparents to look after the child, if ever the parents cannot. If the child is male, usually, then he will have two godfathers and one godmother, and vice versa. At the end of the ceremony, the child is sprinkled three times with water, and the ceremony is over. The whole point of the water, as was mentioned earlier, is to symbolise the washing away of sin, concerning the person, or soul, of the child. The fact that the font is at the entrance of the church shows how it will progress in life, through to its final point in the church, after its funeral. Baptism is very important in the church, as, without it, one isnt considered to be a pure member of the congregation. As the bible says, in 1Corinthians 6:11: You have been washed cleanyou have been sanctifiedyou have been declared righteous in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God. Death For dust you are and to dust you will return Genesis 3:19 Just as baptism is very important, so, also, is death. It is the final thing, which inevitably happens to all of us. But apart from all that, it too is a progression: from life into either Heaven or Hell (of course, if one has been the best kind of person they could have been, through their life, then Hell isnt even considered). However, some atheists do decide to have their funerals in a church. Some think this shouldnt be allowed, as they havent accepted God. Suicide is also taken into consideration. Some Christian denominations, The Roman Catholic Church and Jehovahs Witnesses in particular, believe suicide to be a sin, as it is not the right of any human being to decide whether they or another should live or die, and are refused a Christian burial. In this country, though, the main denomination, the Church of England, governs all Protestants in England to have a Christian burial, unless specified by the subject in his or her will, a written statement, and/or proof from a close re lation. Therefore, regardless of some peoples wishes, they are given a Christian funeral along the lines of the following. Before the funeral, the undertaker will prepare the body, dressing it in the deceaseds favourite clothes, or a shroud, after which, it in a coffin. It is then taken home, or to a chapel of rest, where friends and relatives can go, to pay their last respects. This is known as the wake. On the day of the funeral, itself, the coffin, usually placed with decorative flowers etc, is brought to and from the church in a hearse, or a horse-drawn carriage, taken through to the high altar, at the front of the church, by the pallbearers, and the service begins. Hymns are sung, and prayers said, to introduce the service, before the minister makes a tribute to the deceased. Then those who were close to the deceased will give a short speech, or eulogy, before another sermon is preached, and more prayers and hymns. Finally, the coffin will be taken to the cemetery for burial or cremation, and a final prayer will be said (which is where the famous Ashes to Ashes, dust to dust comes in), before the body is buried or burnt. Afterwards, there is usually a reception, where a toast is made to the deceased. Part Two Marriage (and Divorce?) Let marriage be honourable among all Hebrews 13:4 In Christianity, marriage is sacred. A bond, which can, and should, never be broken. The joining of two persons, who become as one. As the bible says, in 1Corinthians 7:10-11: a wife should not depart from her husbandand a husband should not leave his wife. It clearly states that separation, or even divorce, would be a sin. There are four main points, which Jesus identified, concerning marriage: 1) Adultery is the only grounds for divorce whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, and marries another commits adultery. Matthew 19:9 2) The husband is the head of the house, and as head, he should love, care, and respect his wife Let wives be in subjection to their husbandshusbands continue loving your wives, just as Christ also loved the congregation Ephesians 5:23-25 3) Christians should marry only other Christians only in the Lord 1Corinthians 7:39 4) A man is to have only one wife a man will leave his father and mother and he must stick to his wife and they must become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 However, this is interpreted differently, among different Christian denominations. For instance, in the Roman Catholic Church, there are absolutely no grounds for divorce at all, not even adultery gives an excuse for it. If a Roman Catholic does divorce, he is faced with the prospect of excommunication. The same goes for the other three points of marriage. And if he wants to marry again, he isnt permitted to do so in a church. With Jehovahs Witnesses, adultery is a ground for divorce, but the only one, and even then, a husband or wife should be forgiving, and divorce should be treated as a last resort. In the Church of England, two people may not even want to be wed, but they may just want a blessing, therefore being identified as married in the eyes of God and the church. The Greek Orthodox Churchs view is very similar to that of the Roman Catholics, in that marriage is one of the most holy states to be in, and must be viewed as such. Therefore, if a couple divorce, they are seen to be unstable in their faith. Within all reaches of Christianity, though, marriage is seen to be sacred, likened to the relationship between Jesus and the Church. As is written in Ephesians 5:23: a husband is head of his wife as the Christ also is head of the congregation. Therefore, all Christian denominations treat it very seriously. Two people cannot, just on a whim, marry, because that decision will affect the rest of their lives. Therefore, married Christians should be constantly aware of their behaviour around people of the opposite sex, and their spouse. Firstly, being in mind of what marriage is about, people should choose carefully, before marriage, deciding if they truly love the other person enough to live with them, happily, for the rest of their lives. Next, during marriage, they should be aware that every day, they must be in mind of their partner, and how what they do will affect them (Im thinking primarily of adultery, but even flirting, if the spouse doesnt like it, is testing the waters of the r elationship). Finally, if one is considering divorce, Christianity strongly encourages the person to look at their partner in the most positive light possible, and think about what made them want to marry them in the first place. At the end of the day, though, some teachings say, it is ultimately the individuals choice, but even then, it does affect the spouse. Most denominations, though, do not approve of, or look well on, divorce at all. Purely for the reason that Jesus gave only one reason for it: adultery something which, if you really loved your partner, you wouldnt even dream of doing anyway. In short, divorce is wrong, unscriptural, and should only be treated as a last resort. Part Three Rites of Passage: Only for Believers? Not everyone saying to me Lord, Lord will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will. Matthew 7:21 So, should those who are unbelievers, or heathens, be allowed Christian ceremonies? Can they be allowed to have Christian rites performed for them, despite never going to church, or being involved with the church, or, as is more the case now, any church at all? Well, this, again, is not easy to answer. Jesus did say that the message of Christianity should be preached to all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues, so from that, one can argue that Jesus taught to embrace those outside Christianity. However, Jesus also said, in the case of marriage, that Christians should marry only other Christians. Again, though, shifting the balance once more, baptism is not only applied to Christian babies. There is an account in Acts chapter 8, which tells of an Ethiopian eunuch, who is baptised there n the spot, in a nearby body of water, so one, again, could argue that anyone can enter the religion, and many people do convert to Christianity, having been Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and even Pagans, so, in that sense, there is no limitation. The same goes for death (especially in this country, as has been explained above): if one has realised that theyve lived a sinful life, they can make one last repentance, before dying. In that sense, through their death, theyve been baptised, as it were. I suppose, though, really, its down to the individual, and what s/he really feels. Personally, I wouldnt bother with the fuss of paying for a church to get married in, unless I really wanted to get married in one, and I had agreed with my fiancà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½e, what we wanted to do. Some people only do things to please others, or for ceremonial sake, either case, with no real personal feeling or regard, and I feel that this makes for unhappy circumstances. Unless a person is completely sure of what they are doing, should they decide that they want to do it at all, or in a Christian place of worship. If one strongly believes in Christianity, as Jesus would say, if his heart is in it, then that person is a Christian, whether baptised or not. But that is only one persons viewpoint, which is why the issue becomes a tricky one, as Christianity is dealing with millions of peoples, and not just one, viewpoints.

Essay on Women in Science and Technology
Essay on Women in Science and Technology Essay on Women in Science and Technology Essay on Women in Science and TechnologyThe era of globalization and rapid technological development has changed peopleââ¬â¢s lives dramatically. Science and technology play an extremely important role in the contemporary society. Government in developed and developing countries recognize the importance of the development of ST sphere. The roles of men and women have changed dramatically in the contemporary society.à Women have got more freedom to express themselves and take active part in the development of technologies, despite the fact that there are still problems in this sphere.à As stated in the reportà by the United Nations(2011) calledà Applying a Gender Lens to Science, Technology and Innovation, : ââ¬Å"There is also need for recognition of the importance of applying a ââ¬Å"gender lensâ⬠to STI for development. Indeed, STI policies and programmes will not be effective, equitable and sustainable unless the gender lens is applied so as to reflect the ai ms, concerns, situation and abilities of both women and menâ⬠(11). People realize the gender equality is one of the components of healthy society and true development is impossible without it.à Only understanding of contribution women can make to the development of science and technology can bring positive impact on the development of this sphere. At the present moment all over the world, with small exceptions, women take an active social role and demonstrate their abilities in a lot of spheres. Nowadays women are active in good production industry, natural-resources management, educational sphere, community management. Women occupy different positions in these spheres and professions in the spheres mentioned above are mostly considered to be female ones . Big percentage of women work in the medical industry, as well. In the developing countries women are also often involved in agricultural sphere and take part in the production of food, selling it and farming.à In additi on, most of women have additional burden, such as home work and care about the members of the family.à Despite the growing temps of technological development andà popularity of feminism, womenà do not still possess equal position in the society.à ââ¬Å"Although women and girls make up approximately 50 per cent of the global population, they have access to much less than half of the resources in terms of technology, financing, land, training and education, and informationâ⬠(Applying a Gender Lens to Science, Technology and Innovation, 12). A lot specialists believe that true progress and development are not possible without womenââ¬â¢s active participation in these processes.à The gender lens would be an essential contribution to the development of STI sphere and would enable people to meet the global changes.à ââ¬Å"UNESCO figures reveal that in 121 countries with available data, women comprise 29 percent ofà researchers but there were big disparities among regions. For example, in Latin America and the Caribbean, 46 percent of researchers are female and Argentina, Cuba, Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela have achieved gender parity. In Asia, women constitute only 18 percent of researchers overall. India and Japan have 13 percent female researchers and South Korea has 15 percent. In Africa women comprised about 33 percent of researchersâ⬠(UNESCO 2009). These numbers show that womenââ¬â¢s participation in STI is very low.à Even in the countries with comparatively high rates, womenââ¬â¢s participation does not make even 50 per cent.à These results show that gender inequality still exists in this sphere and it is necessary to pay scrupulous attention to this problem. The Baltic countries show the best results in this sphere. Womenââ¬â¢s engagement in STI is comparatively high and is often higher than 50 percents. Among such countries are Lithuania (68.3à %), Estonia, Estonia (63.9%),à Bulgaria (63.8à %), and Latvia (63.2à %) (Human Resources in Science and Technology). The experience of these countries can become a valuable help for other countries which want to establish gender equality in the sphere of science and technology. The history shows a lot of examples of great input made by women to the development of STI. It is hard to overestimate the role of women in the development of different sphere. Scientific and industrial field, as well as other technological industries are influenced and dominated by men. Despite the fact that there are women who have played an important role in the development of STI industry, their names are rarely mentioned.à For example, Ada Byron King, the daughter of the famous Lord Byron, became the first computer programmer. She also was a prominent mathematician. Unfortunately, her name is rarely mentioned in the history of the development of the computer industry and when people speak about this sphere they remember the names of famous male specialis ts. Earlier history also contains data about the famous female specialists in science and technology, but their names are even less remembered than Ada Byron Kingââ¬â¢s name. Hypatia, a Egyptian mathematician who lived in 400s made great contribution to the development of science. Maria Gaetana Agnesi made a great contribution to the science by her work in differential calculus in 1700s. Sofia Kovalevskaya worked in 1800s in Russia. Her contribution to the development of astronomy and mathematics is hard to overestimate. From recent history, it is worth to mention Grace Hopper, a PhD in mathematics. She became one of leaders on the field of software development and made a great contribution to the development of new programming techniques. ââ¬Å"A true visionary, Dr. Hopper received many awards for her work, including ironically the Data Processing Management Associations Man-of-the-Year awardâ⬠(Abrams). Grace Hopper became the first to recognize possible profits people could have from the use of computers and she did a lot to put her ideas into practice. She realized that making the computers easier in use would increase their popularity among ordinary people. In this way she made her contribution to the computer revolution and made computers more available.à This case illustrates not only womenââ¬â¢s ability to achieve high results in the sphere of science and technologies. It also demonstrates the way female brain works. In contrast to men, who think about complicated schemas and complex technologies, women take into account the sphere of application and use technology more available for people. ââ¬Å"Recent research has found that men are seduced by the technology itself. They tend to get into the faster-race-car syndrome, bragging about the size of their discs or the speed of their microprocessors. Women tend to take a more practical approach. They generally think that machines are meant to be used, and dont really care about whats insi de the box. They just want it to work, and to get things doneâ⬠(Abrams). In the interesting study performed by the Center for Children and Technology specialists tried to find the difference between male and female approaches to technological advances. The participants of the experiment, both ââ¬â men and women ââ¬â were asked to described the perfect machine of the future. Results showed that machines proposed by men were designed in order to get their owners to expand control and to become more powerful. The machines designed by women had an intention to help people and to make their life easier. These differences in approaches to technological innovations show basic difference between male and female approaches in life. Men want to expand their influence and women are ready to adapt technologies and make their use easier and more comfortable for people. That is the reason men are more likely to invent new things and women are more likely to improve things which alread y exist. This division does not make men superior to women nor vice versa. It means that men and women possess different types of knowledge and skills and best results can be achieved in their combination. Until present moment women were underestimated in the computer industry. Little female IT specialists took part in the development of the hardware and software. ââ¬Å"On the business side, a recent US Department of Labor study reports that women are not successfully moving beyond mid-management boundaries in this industry in fact, theres been only a 3% gain in the past 10 years ââ¬Å" (Abrams).à Women are not presented in major CEOs and in the biggest companies which produce computers. The National Assessments on Gender and STI report states that women still have worse access to information and technologies in comparison to men.à Womenââ¬â¢s role in the technological development is still badly defined. Technological resources are scantly used to support womenââ¬â¢s ac tivities and occupation. In addition, the percentage of women in science and technology is very low (Gender Equality in the Knowledge Society).à ââ¬Å"Women remain severely under-represented in engineering, physics and computer science - less than 30% in most countries ââ¬â while the numbers of women working in these fields are also decliningâ⬠(Gender Equality in the Knowledge Society).à In addition, women have less access to different resources, which would help them to take leadership position and have active influence on social processes. Women usually have lower access to finances, property, education and technology. This is very true from the developing countries, but in the à developed counties this tendency is also actual. à This can be explained by several reasons. Generally, women who try to enter technology profession experience same difficulties as women trying to enter other fields.à These difficulties include gender prejudgments, lack of female role models, difficulties in brining into line professional and personal responsibilities.à à Gender prejudgments assume common belief that women have less talents and inclinations when it comes to technologies and science.à à In addition, economic status and political power also play an important role in female parity in science and technology. Men occupy high position in the society and politics and have access to the distribution of resources. They influence the distribution of social roles, as well, and, naturally, they try to save status quo with male dominance in different spheres, and science and technology are not an exception. What is notable, women in the countries with good health care and childcare have more chances to enter the sphere of science and technology. In addition, countries where gender equality is considered to be the necessary component of the healthy society women also have more chances for normal self-expression in different fields.à à Gende r equality usually assumes ââ¬Å"the equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and menâ⬠(OSAGI, 2001).à This equality should result in ââ¬Å"equal conditions for realizing their full human rights and for contributing to, and benefiting from, economic, social, cultural and political developmentâ⬠(ILO, 2007). This equality assumes not only shared duties, but also equal access to resources and participation in their distribution.à Nowadays, access to property is not enough for the equality .In the era of information, access to information can be even more important than access to property. Property distribution is important but it will not resolve the problem completely till women do not have equal access to information and technological resources. The problems with gender inequality and lack of professional opportunities for women in STI sphere are especially evident in the developing countries. There are different steps which may help to resolve the problem. Informational policy is very important. Giving men and women necessary information concerning the problem can help to resolve it. Education should become another strong factor which influences the distribution of social roles and positions. It is necessary to make sure that women in the developing countries have equal with men access to quality education.à Boys and girls have usually equal access to primary and secondary education, but the situation changes when it comes to higher education. Some changes in the curriculum would be useful to help girls and women to get more information about the STI sphere and create necessary conditions for their further employment in this sphere. In a lot of developing countries women have less access to higher education and it is necessary toà put all possible effort to change the situation for better. As mentioned above, good healthcare and mother care become those factors which help to create better career opportunities for women . So, the development of healthcare and mother care systems will also contribute to the creating of better career opportunities for women.Better informing and collecting precise statistics data can also make a contribution to the development of gender equality in science and technology. Information and statistical data will show areas where the problems still exist and specialists will have an opportunity to pay more attention to these spheres. After distinguishing problematic zones, it will be possible to find out possible reasons of low female participation and think about possible means to resolve these problems.à Popularization of the women who make an important contribution to STI would also help to reduce the gender gap in this sphere.à Mass media can help to pursue this goal.Women play an important role in a lot of spheres in à the contemporary society. They make great contribution to the development and improvement of life in a lot of spheres. Unfortunately, science and technology are the spheres where women do not have equal possibilities with men. There are a lot of possible explanations of this inequality, but gender bios, prejudices and unequal distribution of resources are among the main ones. Gender inequality in STI is more common in the developing countries. There are different ways to deal with the problem. Proper monitoring, proper informing and creating necessary work conditions should improve the situation in this field.à Gender equality and normal work conditions for both, men and women are the characteristics of any normal society and it is necessary to pay attention to the problem of gender inequality in science and technology because this can be beneficial for the development of these spheres.

Chaucerââ¬â¢s Use of ââ¬ÅTenderââ¬Â in Troilus and Criseyde
Chaucerââ¬â¢s Use of ââ¬Å"Tenderâ⬠in Troilus and Criseyde Chaucer is known for his talent at pushing his readers to step outside their preconceived notions regarding genre, characters, and themes. In addition to this, Chaucer uses words with double meanings to create ambiguity and depth throughout his works. Troilus and Criseyde is no different in this respect. Throughout Troilus and Criseyde, Chaucer uses the word tendre several times, using its various meanings to make the reader question the intentions of the characters. According to the Middle English Dictionary, the adjective form of tendre has seven different meanings in medieval texts. Chaucer employs all but two of those meanings in Troilus and Criseyde. The meanings that Chaucer employs are as follows: Immature, young; unsophisticated, innocent, naÃÆ'à ¯ve; also unblemished, spotless; Physically sensitive, esp. to pain; susceptible to injury, vulnerable;easily injured, fragile; Of a plant, part of a plant: fresh, new-grown; not hardy, delicate; Physically weak; debilitated, enfeebled, morally week, unable to resist temptation; also impressionable; Sorrowful, heartfelt; piteous, painful, touching; (b) easily moved; of the heart: compassionate, sympathetic (207-209). Chaucer uses the adjective form of tendre five times in Troilus and Criseyde, and employs its various meanings throughout the text. Pandarus is the first to use the word in Book II: his stream of thought during a discussion with Criseyde includes the word. He thinks, If I my tale endite/Aught harde, or make a proces any whyle,/ She shal no savour have therin but lite,/ And trowe I wolde hire in my wil bigyle;/For tender wittes wenen al be wyle/ Theras thei kan nought pleynly understonde; Forthi hire wit to serven wol I fonde (267-273). Here, it seems that Chaucer wants the reader to see the word tendre as meaning naÃÆ'à ¯ve, since Pandaruss quote seems to indicate that she is too simple-minded to understand some things. However, this quote is one instance in the text where Chaucer relies on the multiple meanings of the word to create depth. It is important to remember that tender can also mean impressionable, as seen in the fourth definition (above). Because it is Pandarus, who co ntinually pressures Criseyde into action towards Troilus, who uses the word, it seems likely that Chaucer intends the term to be taken both ways. Additional ambiguity surrounding this particular use of the word is that tender in the sense of naivete also indicates youth and innocence (as seen in the first definition listed above). Chaucer wants the reader to consider Criseyde in relation to both of these terms. She is a widow, but is she is also young. She is the woman who cheats on Troilus and breaks his heart, but she is also innocent. Chaucer uses an ambiguous term to make the reader examine Criseydes character more closely. Pandarus also uses the word in Book III, during a discussion with Criseyde. Criseyde wants him to give Troilus a ring on her behalf, to which Pandarus replies, This [man] is so gentil and so tendre of herte/ That with his doeth he wol his sorwes wreke (904-905). The reader can interpret this word according to both the second and fifth meanings listed above. Describing Troilus as tenderhearted suggests that he is vulnerable, sorrowful, or painful (207-209). However, because it is Pandarus (who also pressures Troilus into action throughout the text) who speaks the phrase, Chaucer intends the reader to see the double meaning of the word and think of Troilus as impressionable, as well. The next two uses of the word tender are fairly straightforward, and do not rely on multiple meanings. Criseyde uses the term when she cries to herself upon realizing that she will be exchanged for Antenor. She asks, How shal youre tendre herte this sustene? (795). Here, the word is interpreted as meaning vulnerable. The fourth use of the word occurs in the opening of Book V: the narrator uses it in relation to a plant, saying, and Zepherus as ofte/ Ibrought ayeyn the tendre leves grene (10-11). The fifth and final use of the word occurs in Book V, during the narrators description of Crisyede: Tendre-hearted, slydynge of corage;/ But trewely, I kan nat telle hire age (825-826). Here, Chaucer again plays off the various meanings of tendre, using it to signify both naÃÆ'à ¯vete and compassion. However, because he follows the phrase with a reference to her age, he wants the reader to note that the term can also indicate youth. Chaucer uses the multiple meanings of the word tendre throughout Troilus and Criseyde to add depth to the characters. Though sometimes he intends the word to be interpreted in a straightforward fashion, in at least three instances he urges the reader to take into account the varying meanings of the word. The medieval definitions of the terms as naÃÆ'à ¯ve, young, sensitive, fresh in relation to plants, and sorrowful offer insight into Chaucers style and intentions.

Jihadi John and London's Culture of Gang Violence Assignment
Jihadi John and London's Culture of Gang Violence - Assignment Example Mohammed Emwazi alias Jihadi John is an example of a self-proclaimed British young Muslim who has joined the ISIS where he is now an IS executioner. Mohammed Emwazi grew up in a highly populated and poverty-stricken city with high levels of shootings, drug wars, and gang violence. Mohammed Emwazi grew up in a middle-class background and poverty does not appear to have motivated him to join radical groups. Mohammed Emwazi joined ââ¬Å"London Boysâ⬠that was a criminal gang in north-west London that engaged in violent robberies to support the extremists, Al-Shabaab. Recently, extremists have been associating with organized criminal gangs like the London Boys. Emwazi grew up in North London and turned to drugs, gangs, and violence to escape from alienation that young Muslims experienced in London. Indeed, Muslim prison population has been increasing where 27 % of all prisoners in London are Muslims. Emwazi listened to radical preachers and attended their rallies that helped him to understand his Islamic identity. Radical Islam lures young Muslims since it creates a sense of brotherhood. Joining the criminal gangs and later the radical Islamist group, ISIS helped Emwazi and like-minded people to overcome tribal differences and escape uncertainty. Apparently, the article, Jihadi John and London's culture of gang violence establish what is pushing and drawing young Muslims in London into joining ISIS. The fractured environments that young Muslims live in push young Muslims in London into joining ISIS. The gang experiences that young Muslims gain in living in areas with high levels of shootings, drug wars, and gang violence derives the courage to join and support the activities of ISIS. These criminal gangs support the activities of radical Islamist groups.Ã

Television Violence Essay -- Media TV Violent Essays
Television Violence The media is everywhere in our lives. From billboards to SMS text messaging on cell phones, we cannot escape the media and its impact on daily life. Of the many impacts, television violence and the influence it has on youth is one of the most debated topics. Many experts, including some from the University of California, Santa Barbra, say that the amount and type of violence viewed results in violent actions performed by youth of all ages and violence continually affects them throughout their lives. Others are more skeptical and argue that the media is not the sole cause of youth violence; they believe that there are many other factors that contribute to the violent behaviors of youth. They see the condition more as a mixture of different situations that cause violence in youth, violence on television being just one of the factors. However, both sides of the argument understand that each individual is a separate situation and reacts differently to the violence portrayed. This essay will inform the reader of the claims both sides formulate to defend their argument and allow the reader to determine their own conclusion. Many studies over the past seven years have sought to prove that television and the violence portrayed does have a direct influence on youth and how they will deal with situations in real life. Out of the many studies, one of the most concrete and convincing is the National Television Violence Study (or NTVS) conducted by University of California Santa Barbra, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, University of Texas at Austin and the University of Wisconsin Madison. This study observes not only the response of youth to various types of content but also observed the response of th... ...Media violence: Exposure and Content. Motivational Case Studies Essay
I believe in the ââ¬Å"Two Men and a Truckâ⬠case study, the motivational theory that Mrs. Sheetsââ¬â¢ uses is the goal setting theory. Her initial goal was to help support her sonsââ¬â¢ part-time jobs. She created a marketing campaign, although she may not have seen it as such, by designing the stick figure drawing that is still being used today in the company. As a single mother, she did not want to turn away the phone calls that continued to be received, even after her sons went away to college and therefore, she purchased an inexpensive truck and hired two workers to maintain the business operations. Mrs. Sheets expanded the company and set out a goal of being the most customer-friendly moving company. To assist with this goal, she arranged trainings for her employees, and franchisee employees, where they learn basic customer service tools and how to be a high-functioning team member. These tools include how to properly answer the phone and to always shake the customerââ¬â¢s hand when the work is completed. She also asks employees to complete a survey card so the organization can use the feedback as coaching opportunities. All of these tools helped Mrs.à Sheetsââ¬â¢ company become one of the most successful moving companies in the area. In the Siemens case study, the motivational theory that is described is Management by objectives. Mr. Kleinfield took over a Siemens unit in 1998 and immediately requested a change in work shifts, including working weekends. The employees were shocked by what was being requested but also recognized that due to a competitor, their jobs were in jeopardy from a lack of production. Mr. Kleinfield expressed an interest in the work being performed by being in the factory and asking questions related to the operations. This interest helped win over the employees and with the new schedules, production times were cut from six weeks to one. Although the employees did not know what was going on, Mr. Kleinfield recognized what the ultimate goal of the production facility was and put a plan into action as soon as he took it over to make it a success. By demonstrating this leadership, he ultimately was offered the CEO position, even though he never worked in any facility for very long, especially as a Consultant, but did have experience in every department that was associated with Siemens.
